A day in the life of a child life specialist.
By Golisano Childrens Hospital: ”Our child life specialists are here to help children feel comfortable in a medical setting, when they get to the hospital. They recognize that the hospital can seem like a scary place to kids, and are always willing to go the extra mile to put patients and families at ease.”
“Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospitalhas an unusual fix for what ails some kids — a therapeutic space called the multi-sensory room.
The room, in use since last fall, is the first of its kind in a U.S. hospital. It is designed to help provide pain control without drugs and to relax or stimulate, as needed, certain pediatric patients.
Child life specialists — health care professionals who help and support young hospital patients — determine whether a child would benefit from spending 30 to 45 minutes in the room with a specialist. Not every child at the children’s hospital will use the multi-sensory room, and it isn’t something parents can request.”
