Children who understand what's happening show less anxiety, fewer behavior changes, and better adjustment, and hospital visits go smoother when a child has been prepared for what they'll see.
Medical play is how Child Life Specialists do that preparation: handling the equipment makes it familiar, and role-playing the caregiver replaces helplessness with understanding.
